The Level 1 Hair and Beauty programme is ideal for those who are looking to start a career in this sector as a beginner, with an opportunity to develop maths and English skills alongside your main programme.

It is designed to develop the required skills and knowledge that enable you to progress to a higher level course, making you work ready for the future.

You will work towards a City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Hair & Beauty.

Units of study include:

  • Basic Manicure
  • Basic Pedicure
  • Skincare
  • Make up
  • Nail art
  • Create an image
  • Working in the Hair and Beauty Industry
  • Hair Styling
  • Shampooing techniques
  • Salon reception
  • Health and Safety
  • Working with others

You will work in our on site, professional salons, giving you a real sense of industry and some work experience. There are also a range of trips and visits that you can participate in throughout your course as well as being part of guest speaker talks from specialists in the industry.

You will be assessed by practical tasks (where you work on a model) and theory work is assignment based.

You will also be required to re sit GCSE Maths and English and complete a Personal Development Programme with your course tutor throughout the year.

On successful completion of the course you can progress to the Level 2 Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy course, as long as you achieve a grade 4 in your GCSE English re sit.

There is a kit and uniform required for this course, all information is given at enrolment.

This course is for 16-18 year old’s.
You must have 4 GCSE’s at Grade 2 or above including English & maths.

On applying for the course you will be invited for an interview with one of the hair and beauty team members. A written test may also be required at enrolment.

This course is free for 16-18 year olds. There is also a Learner Support Fund available, if applicable, to help towards the cost of kits and uniforms.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
