While studying for this qualification you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to work professionally and safely in the hairdressing industry. Learners then practice the techniques, reaching the standard required to work in Salon 50, our fully equipped commercial area which is open to the public.
Course Structure
You will be studying:
- Working in the hair industry
- Health and safety in the salon
- Client consultation for hair services
- Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
- Promoting products and services
- Cutting hair
- Colouring hair
- Perming hair
- The art of dressing hair
- Create an image based on a theme
- Plaiting and twisting
As part of this study programme you will work towards English and maths. This will provide you with the skills you needed to perform confidently, effectively and independently in learning, life and work. You will take part in competitions to develop your creative skills and have the opportunity to attend industry events. You will be assessed throughout the course with online exams, assignments and observation of practical skills, in a simulated working environment. Successful students can seek employment in the hairdressing industry. You may want to progress to Level 3 in hairdressing or widen your Level 2 skills with Level 2 Barbering.

* If you have not already achieved a GCSE pass at grade 4 (C in the old grading structure) or above in English and Maths you will study Maths and/ or English as an integral part of your college programme.
Either completion of level 1 in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy or a GCSE grade 9-4 (A- C) in maths or English and a positive school report. Mature learners need to have good personal presentation and communication skills.
Course may be free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 2 qualification.
For all other students fees apply:
1st year course fee £1673; Exam Fee £99.
Please note that the purchase of kits and uniforms is mandatory. Cost of kits and unfirm start at around £200, tutors will give more information at enrolment and give you order forms. Funding from the Learner Support Fund may be available if you are eligible.

Fees and funding
If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
