Course Structure
This Level 1 BTEC Art and Design course is designed to build your confidence in a wide range of art and design skills through a series of workshops. These workshops will help you develop your ideas independently and create a comprehensive portfolio of work. This portfolio will showcase your artistic abilities and can be used for further studies in art and design.
Our course aims to develop your creative skills using a broad range of materials, including:
- Drawing and painting
- Textiles
- Photography
- Sculpture
You will be encouraged to develop your ideas independently while exploring the work of other artists and designers. Additionally, the course includes the study of GCSE English and Maths.
What Will You Do?
Throughout the course, you will engage in a wide range of creative activities such as:
- Drawing: Learn the fundamentals of drawing, including techniques for observation and representation.
- Painting: Experiment with different painting mediums and styles to express your creativity.
- Mixed Media: Combine various materials and techniques to create unique art pieces.
- Graphic Design: Develop basic graphic design skills and learn how to communicate visually.
- Printmaking: Explore different printmaking techniques to produce original prints.
- Ceramics: Learn the basics of working with clay and other ceramic materials.
- Sculpture: Create three-dimensional works using a variety of sculptural methods.
A key part of the learning programme involves research using internet and library resources. You will study the work of other artists to inform and inspire your own creations.
Exhibitions and Trips
You will have the opportunity to exhibit your work in a public exhibition at the end of the year. This provides a platform to showcase your talents and gain feedback from a wider audience.
In addition to studio-based activities, you will participate in trips and visits related to your projects. These experiences will enrich your understanding and provide real-world context to your studies.
This course requires 2 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above (E in the old grade structure), or a relevant entry level qualification.
English and maths at Entry 3 or above.
You will need to demonstrate a curiosity in art and design and an interest in exploring a range of creative skills and ideas.
This course is free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 1 qualification.

Fees and funding
If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
