This course offers you the opportunity to explore a range of skills and ideas in art and design, whilst gaining relevant qualifications in English and maths. Many former students have progressed onto Level 2 and 3 BTEC qualifications through which they have successfully gained places at University and work in the art and design industry.

Course Structure


A series of workshops are offered, through which you will gain confidence in a range of art and design skills. You will then use these skills to develop your ideas independently.

As part of the course you will create a portfolio of work demonstrating your artistic ability which can be used to progress onto further study in art and design.

Through our course we aim to develop your creative skills using a broad range of materials including, drawing and painting, textiles, photography and sculpture. You will be encouraged to independently develop ideas, whilst looking at the work of other artists and designers. As part of the course you will study functional skills in English and maths.

* If you have not already achieved a GCSE pass at grade 4 (C in the old grading structure) or above in English and Maths you will study Maths and/ or English as an integral part of your college programme.

This course requires 2 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above (E in the old grade structure), or a relevant entry level qualification.

English and maths at Entry 3 or above.

You will need to demonstrate a curiosity in art and design and an interest in exploring a range of creative skills and ideas.

This course is free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 1 qualification.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
