If you are a creative person and have a keen interest in photography and an interest in increasing your skills in this subject to professional standards, then the BTEC Diploma in Photography could be for you. You will gain practical experience in all aspects of photography using our professionally equipped photographic facility. This is a Study Programme course which, if successful, leads to the 90 credit qualification over one year and progression to the full 180 credit qualification over 2 years. All photography teaching staff have experience of working in the photographic industry.

Course structure


  • Film based Black & White and Colour Photography
  • Traditional Darkroom Skills
  • Studio and Location Photography
  • Experimental Photographic Techniques
  • Digital and Image Manipulation Skills
  • Specialist Photographic Applications including documentary, editorial, fashion, fine art and advertising
  • Historical Development in Photography

In your second year of study, you will have the opportunity to specialise in a chosen area of Photography. You will also have the opportunity to attend a residential trip abroad and regular exhibition visits as part of your course.

After you complete the course, you could progress to:

Higher Education courses in a related area such as Photography, Digital Photography, Photojournalism.

This course requires 4 GCSEs at Grade 4 (C in the old grade structure) or above including an art based subject
OR a relevant Level 2 qualification in an art based subject at Merit Level & GCSE/Level 2 in English & maths.

A portfolio of your work is required for presentation at interview.

This course is free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 2 qualification.

If you're aged 19+ you may be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of the course.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
