From a young age, Raj was drawn to the idea of public service, inspired by a desire to make a positive impact on his community. However, his journey was not without obstacles. Struggling with dyslexia and facing adversity in school, Raj persevered, fuelled by a deep-seated commitment to helping others and following in his late father’s footsteps.

Raj’s decision to enrol in the Uniformed Public Services programme at Coventry College marked a pivotal moment in his journey. The programme provided him with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to pursue a career in public service. Through a comprehensive curriculum covering citizenship, government policies, health and fitness, leadership, and teamwork, Raj gained valuable insights into various aspects of uniformed public services.

During his time at Coventry College, Raj seized opportunities to engage with industry professionals and explore different career paths within public service. Guest speakers from organizations such as the Counter Terrorism Unit, Fire Services, British Transport Police, and Stop and Search teams provided valuable insights and inspiration for Raj’s future endeavours.

Reflecting on his experience, Raj attributes much of his personal and professional growth to Coventry College, “I have very much enjoyed my time at Coventry College. It has a great atmosphere and the staff are incredibly supportive. Whether it has been helping me with the course or offering great pastoral support – they have had an extremely positive effect on me.”

Winning the election for the student executive team and being named head student of the month were proud moments that highlighted Raj’s achievements and leadership qualities.

Raj’s advice to aspiring public servants is to persevere in the face of adversity and seize every opportunity for growth and learning. His journey serves as a reminder that with determination, dedication, and the right support system, individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals in public service.

Raj McGarry’s journey from adversity to aspiration exemplifies the transformative impact of education and passion in pursuing a career in public service. His story inspires future generations of students to embrace challenges, follow their passions, and make a positive difference in their communities. Through his commitment to serving others, Raj is poised to embark on a fulfilling and impactful career in public service, embodying the values of resilience, compassion, and dedication instilled in him at Coventry College.

My goal is to join the West Midlands Police and work in response as I like the idea that two days are never the same, and their caring approach and attitude is something that I hope to carry with me into the next stage of my career.
