Employability Courses Put Learners On New Career Pathways
Coventry College’s Employer Engagement Team has delivered its latest Sector Gateway Employability Care programme – helping unemployed adults looking for a career change gain entry into the care sector.
The College is responding to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic by working in collaboration with Coventry JobCentre Plus to help adults switch direction and focus on something new.
Sector Gateway courses help people to update their key skills in preparation for employment and give them a taste of different sectors to help them move on to longer study programmes or employment in that field.
The Government-funded six week courses focus on interview techniques and CV writing, as well as developing knowledge and skills for a specific sector.
The Employer Engagement team are delivering a further two employability programmes in January 2021 focusing on Care and Business.
Learners have benefited from the latest programme and feel it has helped them prepare for new employment or whetted their appetite for further study.
Michelle Wilson said: “The Sector Gateway Care course has given me a lot more confidence for when I go to a job interview.
“I feel I’ve gained a lot from this course which will enable me to achieve a Level 2 qualification in social care.”
Hanan Hussein added: “By completing this course I gained a better insight into the care sector and learnt a lot about caring for adults.
“The course has boosted my confidence and given me more employability skills to go into care as a career.
“Thanks to this course and the College tutor, I now have an interview for a job in the care sector.”
Coventry College is calling on employers to support the programmes by accommodating learners on work experience placements.
Emma Ingram, Head of Employer Engagement and Sales at Coventry College, said: “We are pleased to have delivered this latest Sector Gateway programme.
“The feedback from learners has been very positive. These are challenging times but hopefully the programmes we are offering give people the skills and confidence to go into different sectors and learn new skills to prepare them for a new career path.”
