Engineering Students Trip to the AME Centre

Our Engineering Students Had The Amazing Opportunity To Visit The AME Centre.

The engineering students at Coventry College visited the AME centre in Coventry, run by Unipart, in conjunction with Coventry University. At the AME Centre they were introduced to some amazing advancements in the manufacturing sectors using cutting edge technology. The day was filled with illuminating experiences for the learners that left a lasting effect on everyone.

“The key takeaway for the students is the importance of not only learning, but learning how to learn” Dr Danijela Rostohar, Assistant Professor, Expert in Materials Science

Dr Rostohar shared her involvement in developing cutting edge machines for conducting corrective surgery, using laser treatment.

Other highlights from the master classes included the potential of using virtual reality when navigating manufacturing plants, also gaining insights into the remarkable advancements in electronics, including the concept of Smart Shoes (electronics embedded on to materials) these are designed to proactively support individuals who are at risk of falls.

Battery technology and sustainability was another Hot topic for the students to contend with, as they got the opportunity to see the all-electric Nissan car that could achieve 0-100km in less than 5 seconds.

Emma Cygan and Kam Gill the course leaders for the manufacturing degree programme, shared valuable insights about the uniqueness of the degree programme offered at the institution. The course not only teaches technical knowledge but also places a strong emphasis on building the students confidence in solving real-life problems. It was an inspiring message for the students, emphasising that education is not just about learning facts, but also about acquiring the skills to apply that knowledge to real-world challenges in a supportive environment.

“I had a good time at the University site! Going in and exploring the different measuring equipment and most interestingly the possibilities with the use of hydrogen/chemical engineering, as I look into this in my spare time. It was good to see that most of the measuring and testing concepts are similar to what we have covered in our course, more so, when its being used in real life projects.” Jordan Dyson second year engineering student

The engineering tutors are excited with the opportunity this has brought as they look to further engage with local industries, so as to enhance the curriculum offer. This trip came at a crucial time, when learners are about to be introduced to project based learning in their second semester. The Level 3 students will be introduced to three problems that have been put forward by our partners, AWA Consultants, RLE International and FuturMotiv and they look forward to seeing the solutions they will offer as they are our current champions of innovation.

“The trip to the AME has provided me with a glimpse into the world of engineering and has inspired me to pursue a work experience placement alongside my studies to put my theoretical knowledge I’ve learnt in the classroom to use. The opportunity to potentially do a work experience placement with them has driven me to dedicate more of my time to ensuring my performance at college is outstanding” – Tymoteusz Jackowski, Engineering Student
