Labour MP for Coventry South, Zarah Sultana, made a special visit to Coventry College this October, engaging with students from various curriculums, including Business, Science, Health and Social Care, and Public Service.

During her visit, Sultana reminisced about her own college years, recalling how she was part of a cohort that experienced a significant increase in university fees. This pivotal moment ignited her passion for advocacy, driving her commitment to ensure that the voices of the younger generation are heard in Parliament.

Reflecting on her journey, Sultana shared insights from her first campaign for MP in 2019, emphasising the invaluable life skills she gained through the experience. Highlighting how her past experiences shape her current approach to representing her constituents.

Students were encouraged to participate in an interactive Q&A session, where they raised pressing issues such as the ongoing cost of living crisis, access to doctors’ appointments, and the burden of university fees. Sultana addressed each question thoughtfully, providing practical advice and guidance that resonated with the students.

The visit held particular significance for the college’s media learners, who were tasked with capturing the event through filming, interviewing, and photography. This hands-on project offered them a unique opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting, showcasing the dynamic interaction between a public figure and the student body.

As the event concluded, students left feeling inspired and empowered, grateful for the chance to meet a leader dedicated to making a positive impact in their community. One student commented:

“Hearing Zarah’s story and her views on our concerns made me feel like our voices matter.”

Sultana’s visit not only enriched the students’ educational experience but also strengthened the connection between young people and their representatives, fostering a sense of hope for future change in Coventry.
