Employer Partner Westdale Midlands Wins Small Employer of the Year at the West Midlands Combined Authority Adult Learning Awards
The awards, which celebrate exceptional achievements in adult learning, skills, and training, recognised 13 winners and five highly commended learning journeys for their inspiring contributions.
Westdale Midlands, a company specialising in external wall insulation for the social housing sector, has been pivotal in supporting the regional and national net zero agendas. The company’s collaboration with Coventry College has played a significant role in this achievement. Together, they have implemented innovative Skills Bootcamps aimed at retraining local residents for green jobs, particularly as Insulation Technicians.
These two-week Insulation Technician Skills Bootcamps are designed to help residents who may be unemployed, facing redundancy, or seeking a career change into the construction industry. With crucial support from local referral agencies such as Coventry Job Shop, Jobcentre Plus, and the National Careers Service, the initiative has seen remarkable success.
To date, 30 individuals have completed the Bootcamp, which guarantees an interview with Westdale upon completion. Of these, 11 participants have successfully secured positions with the company. Following their initial training, these new hires are enrolled in a 12-week training programme at Westdale’s Training Centre in Coventry, ensuring they are well-equipped for their new roles.
John Tesfay, a recent graduate of the Insulation Technician Skills Bootcamp, shared his transformative experience:
“From being unemployed, with a wife and three young girls, I am in a much better situation to now be able to provide for my family. I would strongly recommend Westdale and Coventry College to others. They have put together a training plan which takes people with no experience, teaches them the ropes, and gives them a job at the end.”
Vice Principal for Business Growth, Development and Partnerships said: “On behalf of the College I’d like to congratulate Westdale on this fantastic achievement.
“The award underscores Westdale’s commitment to both the community and environmental sustainability by addressing the skills gap and providing meaningful employment opportunities.”
She added: “The working partnership is not only advancing individual careers but also contributing to broader economic and environmental goals.”
