Uniformed Public Service students from Coventry College recently participated in a police training day, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience in a realistic training environment.

The event, designed to support Counter Terrorist Firearms Officers in their training, tasked the students with acting as college students caught up in a simulated terrorist action.

Throughout the day, the students were immersed in various high stress scenarios, including a college siege, student shooting, and room searches. These realistic simulations allowed them to witness firsthand the tactics and procedures used by Counter Terrorist Firearms Officers to manage and neutralise such incidents. The experience was not only educational but also emotionally impactful, as students felt the emotions and adrenaline that accompany real emergency situations.

The training day underscored the importance of practical experience in preparing students for their future careers in uniformed public services. While classroom learning is essential, being placed in realistic scenarios allows students to better visualise and comprehend the realities of their chosen field.

Chris Phillips, a Uniformed Public Service lecturer at Coventry College, emphasised the significance of such experiences: “The experience has supported the learners with being able to put into context the communication and technology used in the services following the units completed on the course. Our students will now be able to plan out and run their own incidents for an assignment linked to telecommunications and IT systems in the uniformed public services.”

The Firearms instructor added, “From our perspective the value that live role actors gives is priceless for realistic training.”

Coventry College continues to prioritise providing its students with comprehensive educational experiences that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The successful participation of the Uniformed Public Service students in the police training day highlights the college’s commitment to preparing students for their next steps in their careers.
