Students Engage with Earthbound Exhibition at The New Art Gallery Walsall
Art students at Coventry College have been invited to participate in an enriching artistic experience at The New Art Gallery Walsall, where they will explore the “Earthbound” exhibition and produce creative responses to its themes.
This initiative aims to foster a deeper connection with the natural world through art.
The “Earthbound” exhibition is a major group showcase that features both existing and newly commissioned artworks by nine artists and community makers. Set against the backdrop of global concerns about the climate crisis, the exhibition emphasises our link with the earth and our potential to achieve a more harmonious existence with nature.
Through diverse mediums such as sculpture, drawing and painting, the featured artists address themes related to soil, plants, seeds, animals, and the histories, cultures, and knowledge intertwined with these elements. The exhibition argues that the disconnection between natural and human histories has led to a loss of awareness about how connected we as humans are to natural life.

The participating students from Coventry College will not only explore the gallery but will also engage in a practical response to the themes presented. Each student will select an artist from the “Earthbound” exhibition to research and base their practical work on. This research will be presented on paper, while their practical response can be manifested in either 2D or 3D forms.
Through this exercise, students will immerse themselves in the concepts of care, community, and courage concepts that the works of art embody. By doing so, they will gain a sense of hope and inspiration, envisioning a future where collective and deeper connectivity with the planet can lead to positive environmental change.
The New Art Gallery Walsall’s invitation to Coventry College students underscores the vital role that art can play in addressing environmental challenges and inspiring the next generation to take action. Through this collaborative effort, both institutions aim to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the natural world and all life forms.
