Performing Arts students in Coventry will let loose their creativity for a run of live performances this spring, with new shows and two reimagined classics performed by the region’s up and coming stars.

Coventry College’s Performing Arts department will perform We Will Rock You and Edward Scissor Hands: The Musical as part of its 2022 Performing Arts Showcase, with learners across acting, dance and musical theatre also joining forces to put on a pair of new shows created by the department.

The showcase began with The Commuter, an original story performed by Year 2, Level 3 Acting learners and will continue with Bassett, which tells the story of Citizenship students at Wootton Bassett School locked in at lunchtime by a teacher who has had enough. As their confinement grows more claustrophobic, the pupils begin to see things differently, asking questions about conflict, their country, and themselves.

Bassett, which has been produced in collaboration with Warts and All Theatre Company, will be performed by Year 1, Level 3 Acting learners on Thursday, April 7.

We Will Rock You, the jukebox musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen and book by Ben Elton, will be performed by Year 1 and 2 Dance and Musical Theatre Learners on Tuesday, May 3 and Thursday May 5.

It tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and live music, set in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same and rock music is all but unknown.

Edward Scissor Hands: The Musical has been created by Higher National Certificate students, and will serve as a finale to the showcase on Thursday, May 12.

Inspired by the 1990 film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, Coventry College’s students have devised their own musical version of the iconic movie.

All shows will be performed at the Studio 1 Theatre at Coventry College, with ticket prices ranging from £4 to £6.

Laura Johnson, Performing Arts Curriculum Manager at Coventry College, said: “We are extremely excited to share our 2022 Performing Arts Showcase with these fantastic shows giving our students the chance to show off the results of their hard work over the last few months.

“The level of talent we have in our ranks means our productions will be performed to an extremely high standard, made more exciting by those who will be taking part in their first college production.

“Holding shows like this is what performing arts is all about, and we are delighted to be able to get back to live performances.”
