An award winning apprentice: Kat Adams

“How an apprenticeship helped me gain confidence and turned me into an award winner.”

Kat Adams’ apprenticeship with Coventry College led to her taking on a role as a receptionist for Coventry PR firm Advent Communications.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, she has written about how this decision has helped open up doors for her and has even helped her pick up a Coventry and Warwickshire First YoungPro award.

“I am currently studying my City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration, while working as a receptionist at Advent Communications.

I have been working with the PR company for nearly two years now and it has certainly been an eventful time for me.

My main role at Advent is to look after the day to day running of the office, be the first point of communication via telephone calls and assist our office manager in any tasks she needs doing.

Another important role I have is to record all of our clients’ press coverage that appears in online publications and print media from the press releases we issue to journalists.

I also help to run social media accounts for Advent and our in-house photographer Inpress Images.

When I started at Advent I had very little administration experience and I had never worked in an office before.

After six years working in retail I had started to feel lost and unsure on what I wanted to do as a career.

I eventually took the leap to leave the world of retail behind and decided to take a chance on an apprenticeship with Coventry College in order to take myself and my career on a new path.

Over the last two years I have progressed not only as an apprentice, but as a person as well.

I was shortlisted for Coventry and Warwickshire Apprentice Awards with TouchFM and I won the Coventry and Warwickshire First YoungPro 2019 award in the apprentice category.

Words could not describe how happy I was to win this award and I had an overwhelming amount of support from my family and friends and also from my work family.

This also meant I was automatically shortlisted for the Coventry and Warwickshire First Young Professional of the Year award, which I won at Coombe Abbey in April.

Winning this award has motivated me to keep on progressing. I have now signed up to be part of Coventry and Warwickshire First Young Professionals networking events and I am already looking into putting myself forward for more courses to go alongside my business diploma with Coventry College.

I have also been given more roles and responsibilities within Advent as I am no longer just a receptionist.

Personally I have gained more confidence in myself and am a lot happier in both my professional and personal life.

I really enjoy working at Advent Communications, my colleagues have become good friends and I have never had a bad day or even expect a bad day to happen. I plan to stay working with Advent for as long as they let me stay.”
