Angelina (Lina) Bonsor

Studied: Level 2 Barbering
Progression: Barber at Tayper & Balla in Coventry city centre

Why did you decide to study at Coventry College?
I had been working in the barbering industry for many years and, as I was taught the trade in a shop,  I decided it was time to get my qualifications on paper, so I went to study at Coventry College as it was local to me. I had heard great things about the teaching staff and know a few people who had very positive things to say about the College.

What course did you study, and what did you enjoy the most?
I studied Barbering Level 2 with Karen Randle and I mostly enjoyed the interaction between her and the students. She was very confident with her teaching and was also approachable. The focus was on getting the core values and teachings across, but in an understandable way. Seeing the progression of the students was fantastic and very encouraging.

How has your career developed since leaving Coventry College?
I am proud to say I am now the Second Female Grand Master Barber in the UK with The British Master Barbers, as well as a Master Craftsman in Hairdressing and Barbering with The Hair and Barber Council.

What was the most important thing you learned at Coventry College that has helped you in your career?
The course enforced the basic structures and gave me the confidence to show others how to do it, plus the confidence in myself that I’m doing my job correctly. It showed me that you can do things many different ways but still achieve the same result.

What advice would you give to those following in your footsteps at Coventry College?
Persevere!  Listen and take in as much as you can from the tutor as you won’t get a second chance. The tutors are there because they know what they are talking about. If you’re studying and it’s something you’re passionate about then Coventry College will help you reach your full potential.
