This educational excursion provided the students with a unique opportunity to observe and compare different methods of care and teaching, enhancing their understanding of global practices in the field.

The first stop on their itinerary was a local kindergarten, where the students were tasked with observing the teaching methods and noting how they differ from those in the UK. They were particularly impressed by the kindergarten’s approach to dealing with children with complex needs such as ADHD and autism. The students described these methods as incredibly positive and effective.

Joy, a student from the class, expressed her admiration for the dedication of the teachers.

“I was amazed by the motivation of the teachers to support children with autism and complex needs,” she said. The visit not only allowed the students to observe but also to actively engage with the staff and help look after the children. This hands on experience provided valuable insights into the inclusive and supportive environment fostered by the Hungarian educators.

Next, the group visited a mental health hospital, where they had the chance to compare the level of care and facilities to those in UK hospitals. The students noted that while the equipment and facilities seemed to be behind compared to back home, the processes for getting patients the services they need were more efficient, with notably shorter waiting lists.

Student Samera shared her observations, stating, “I learnt individuals were able to access the service very quickly compared to the UK as our waiting list is much longer.” This comparison highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of both healthcare systems, providing the students with a broader perspective on mental health care.

The final visit was to a Drugs and Alcohol rehabilitation centre, where the students explored different types of therapies and processes aimed at helping patients recover. They had the opportunity to talk to patients, learning about how the environments they grow up in significantly impact the likelihood of drug abuse.

Student Aisa commented on the accessibility of serious drugs in Hungary, stating, “Serious drugs are too easy to access in Hungary and children are able to get addicted from a young age.” This visit underscored the importance of preventive measures and early intervention in combating substance abuse.

In between their visits to various health and social care facilities, the students also had the chance to explore the city of Budapest. For many of the students, this was their first time traveling outside the UK and their first experience on a plane, making the trip even more special and memorable.

The cultural exploration allowed the students to immerse themselves in the local culture, gaining a deeper appreciation for the city’s history and atmosphere. This aspect of the trip added to the overall success of the experience, enriching their educational journey with personal growth and new perspectives.

Overall, the trip to Budapest was a resounding success, providing Level 3 Health and Social Care students with invaluable insights into global health and social care practices. The hands on experiences, combined with the opportunity to compare different systems and methods, have undoubtedly broadened their understanding and will contribute to their future professional development.

The college extends its gratitude to all the facilities and individuals who made this trip possible, and looks forward to seeing how these experiences will influence the students’ academic and career paths. This journey has not only enhanced their knowledge but also inspired them to think critically about the care and support systems in place for individuals with complex needs.
