Hair and beauty students in Coventry helped thousands of athletes look and feel at the top of their game when an elite competition came to the region.

Around 200 hairdressing, barbering and nail services students from Coventry College delivered more 1,000 beauty treatments to Commonwealth athletes at the Birmingham 2022 Athletes Village at the University of Warwick.

The college was chosen to be the hair and beauty specialists at one of three official Commonwealth Games Athletes Villages, working behind the scenes with top athletes throughout the Games, with their handiwork seen by a global television audience.

The department arrived at the University of Warwick Athletes Village before the competitors and remained on site for the duration of the games. The commission provided unprecedented work experience for students completing Level 2 Certificate in Barbering as well as Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Hairdressing or Nail Services.

Jenny Spires, Curriculum Manager of Hair and Beauty at Coventry College, said:

“This opportunity has provided a once in a lifetime experience for our students, many of whom will be returning to complete the next level of their diplomas.”

Gemma Knott, Vice Principal for Business Growth, Engagement and Partnerships at Coventry College, said: “The department should be extremely proud of the work they have done to achieve this, as it shows they have built up a fantastic reputation over the years.”
