AlternativeAcademic Qualifications

From September 2025, Alternative Academic Qualifications (AAQs) replaced certain BTEC Level 3 qualifications as part of the government’s new education reforms.

These exciting new qualifications have been developed in partnership with universities and employers to create a clearer, more effective route into higher education and skilled employment.

What are AAQs?

For those aged 16-18, AAQs are designed to combine academic knowledge with practical, career-focused training.

They provide students with real-world experiences across a variety of professional sectors, developing both subject expertise and skills that employers and universities value.

AAQs are perfect for those who want to progress to higher education while keeping their options open for a wide range of careers. They also suit students who learn best by doing.
