Female Engineering Students Inspired by Industry Leaders for International Women’s Day

Managers form Jaguar Land Rover with female staff from Coventry College

Female engineering students gathered for an inspiring event celebrating International Women’s Day, hearing directly from successful women working in leadership roles across industry and education.

The special event brought together female senior managers from Jaguar Land Rover, and female Engineering and Motor Vehicle students. The speakers shared their personal journeys, the challenges they have faced in traditionally male-dominated fields, and the importance of confidence, self-belief, and supporting other women.

Students studying engineering programmes had the chance to hear first-hand what it is like to create a career in industries where women are still underrepresented. The speakers spoke openly about overcoming barriers and developing resilience, and highlighted the value of empowering the next generation of female engineers.

“The event was exceptionally well organised – intimate, supportive, and a genuinely safe space for participants and presenters alike. It created the perfect environment for open conversation, inspiration, and empowering women to see themselves as part of the automotive industry’s future.” Kelly Gardner, Programme Delivery Manager

Senior managers from Jaguar Land Rover also shared insights into working in the automotive and engineering sector, offering advice on career development and the importance of believing in your abilities, even when entering spaces where women have historically been underrepresented.

“About 40% of women own a vehicle, yet only around 19% of us work within the automotive industry. If we aren’t present, how can we meaningfully influence the products, services, and experiences that shape our daily lives? Increasing female representation isn’t just important – it’s essential to creating a future that reflects everyone.” Parita Kalaria, Programme Delivery Manager

Students were encouraged to ask questions and engage with the speakers, creating an open and supportive discussion about career pathways and opportunities for women in engineering.

“Engineering is about building systems that move the world forward. the questions is not whether women can do it, the questions is how much innovation we lose when they are not encouraged to try.” Golbiz Niknazar, Curriculum Manager Engineering and Motor Vehicle

The event formed part of the college’s celebration of International Women’s Day, reinforcing the college’s commitment to equality, empowerment, and supporting women to succeed in STEM careers.

By connecting students with inspiring female leaders, the college hopes to motivate more young women to pursue engineering careers and to recognise that their ambitions are both achievable and valued
