Coventry College’s talented fashion students have teamed up with the Salvation Army to complete a unique and inspiring sustainable work placement, showcasing the power of creativity and collaboration in promoting a greener future.

The project began with an invitation from the Salvation Army for the students to visit their facilities. During their visit, the students attended an insightful talk, learning about the history of the charity, its mission, and the meaningful work it does in communities. They were then taken on a tour of the facilities, where they gained a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainability and how the charity’s work ties into reducing waste and supporting those in need.

The highlight of the visit was when the students were encouraged to handpick pieces of clothing and fabric from the Salvation Army’s collection. These materials, many of which might have otherwise been discarded, were given a new lease of life through upcycling. Armed with their chosen fabrics, the students set out to design and create entirely new garments, combining their creativity with the principles of sustainability.

Over the course of the academic year, the students worked on their garments outside of their regular course hours, showcasing their dedication to the project and their passion for sustainable fashion. Their hard work culminated in the end of year fashion show, where the upcycled garments took centre stage. Representatives from the Salvation Army attended the event and were delighted to see the students’ incredible creations come to life as they strutted down the catwalk.

The partnership didn’t stop there. After the fashion show, the garments were proudly displayed in the Salvation Army’s city centre window, where they continue to inspire passersby with their innovative designs and sustainable message.

This collaboration not only provided the students with invaluable experience in working with a company and following a brief but also reinforced Coventry College’s commitment to its green pledges and dedication to building a more sustainable future.

“At Coventry College, we are passionate about embedding sustainability into our curriculum and giving our students opportunities to make a real impact. This project with the Salvation Army allowed our fashion students to showcase their creativity while addressing important environmental issues.  As educators, we have a vital role in preparing learners not only with skills for their future careers, but also with the knowledge, values, and mindset to contribute positively to a more sustainable world. said Donna Wilson, Quality Manager

The partnership between Coventry College and the Salvation Army highlights how education, creativity, and sustainability can come together to create something truly impactful. By inspiring students to think about the environmental footprint of fashion, the college is helping to pave the way for a greener and more responsible industry.
