A remarkable evening unfolded at the Albany Theatre as former Coventry College ESOL students Umar and Eliza premiered their play, ‘Walk in our Shoes’.

The production, deeply rooted in their own experiences as underage refugees arriving in the UK, captivated a full house, shedding light on the often-overlooked journeys of asylum seekers.

Umar and Eliza, recognising the power of storytelling, reached out to Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASCs) from Warwickshire County Council to bring their ideas to life. After months of rehearsals and assembling a diverse cast that included a current Coventry College Business learner, the team was ready to take the stage.

The duo made sure not to forget their roots, personally inviting former teachers and encouraging college staff and students to attend the performance. Their heartfelt invitations resulted in a vibrant audience, all eager to witness the emotional narrative.

The play delivered a powerful message, and the audience was visibly moved by the performances. Staff and students alike expressed their admiration for Umar and Eliza’s bravery and talent. Many found the experience enlightening, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers.

“It was an incredibly inspiring insight into the resilience and bravery of our young ESOL learners,” said Jade Bartlett, Curriculum Manager for ESOL. “Walk in our Shoes was a snapshot into the hostility met by young people, as they navigate their way to safety in war time, and the isolation they experience.”

“This production was a ‘sucker punch’ of perspective which made me realise how trivial our concerns can be when compared to the experience of our most vulnerable learners. A truly fantastic and thought-provoking production – well done to all involved. We educate through spreading awareness. Keep up the good work.”

As the final act concluded, the applause echoed throughout the theatre, celebrating not just the talent on stage but the journey that brought them there. The college expressed pride in their former students, emphasising the importance of giving a platform to voices that often go unheard.

Coventry College released a statement, saying, “We are immensely proud of Umar and Eliza for their remarkable achievement. Their performance not only highlights their talent but also highlights the resilience of individuals who have faced tremendous challenges.”

With the success of ‘Walk in our Shoes’, Umar and Eliza are now inspired to continue their artistic journey, eager to use their voices to advocate for others and share their stories with even broader audiences.
