Engineering Department Hosts Insightful ‘Skills of the Future’ Panel Event
Coventry College’s Engineering Department recently welcomed a host of local employers and industry experts to its ‘Skills of the Future’ panel event.
An initiative aimed at ensuring the college’s curriculum stays relevant, adaptive, and innovative in the face of an ever-changing job market. With the engineering sector evolving rapidly due to technological advancements, events like these are critical to aligning education with industry demands.
The Skills of the Future panels are a collaborative effort between Coventry College and local employers to future-proof the skills of learners, ensuring that they are well-equipped to excel in the careers of tomorrow. These panels not only provide the opportunity for employers to shape the landscape of the UK’s jobs market but also give them access to insights from leading industry professionals.
This particular panel was an important milestone, as it also served as an exclusive opportunity for employers who had attended previous meetings, to visit the college’s newly refurbished engineering facilities. Attendees were given a tour modern workshops, including the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines and simulation suites, all of which are designed to provide learners with hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment. These facilities reflect the college’s commitment to ensuring students are trained in environments that closely mirror the workplaces they will enter.
The event culminated in a roundtable discussion, where participants delved into critical topics such as the current provision, expanding the curriculum, and the introduction of new courses. Of particular focus was the development of the college’s new T Level courses, which are designed to offer learners a blend of classroom learning and practical, on-the-job experience. Another highlight was the introduction of the new Welding course, created in response to industry demand for skilled professionals in this essential area.

The roundtable discussions were a chance for employers to share their insights and shape the future of engineering education at Coventry College. These conversations highlighted the importance of collaboration between education providers and industry leaders to ensure that students complete their course with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the workplace.
Speaking about the event, Mike Garrood, Consultant for Engineering at Coventry College said:
“I was so pleased to see the depth and seniority of support from our existing and new Employer network and associated key stakeholders; who gave their valuable time to provide a really positive response to the Engineering curriculum and workshop expansion.”
The event was a resounding success, with attendees expressing their excitement about the college’s forward-thinking approach to education and its commitment to fostering strong industry links. This collaboration is set to ensure that Coventry College continues to produce learners who are ready to excel in the dynamic and competitive world of engineering.
