Crochet Club Unveils Life Size Christmas Tree for the Festive Season

Crochet Christmas tree in reception

group of creative Coventry College staff have brought festive cheer to the college this year with the unveiling of a life size crochet Christmas tree, proudly displayed in the main reception.

The impressive creation is the work of the college’s staff Crochet Club, which first began almost two years ago. What started as a small Tuesday evening meet-up has grown into a vibrant crafting community, with members gathering weekly to crochet, chat and learn new skills from one another. Many members began as complete beginners, supported and taught by more experienced colleagues.

In early spring, the group took on their most ambitious challenge yet: a full-size Christmas tree made entirely from crochet panels. Over six months later, after countless hours of stitching, shaping and assembling, the project has become a stunning festive centrepiece.

The tree was crafted by staff members Wendy, Kelly, Nicky and Les, each contributing sections of the design. To support the structure, Welding teacher Dave Nicholson joined forces with students Martin and Luke to weld a sturdy base capable of holding the finished artwork.

This isn’t the group’s first large scale achievement. Two years ago, the Crochet Club created a remarkable life sized Remembrance Day memorial statue, featuring a soldier and horse adorned with hand-crocheted poppies. The tribute has since become a loved fixture in the college’s reception area every November.

Never ones to slow down, the team is already hard at work on their next project, crocheting 200 white roses for Rosie’s Rainbow Pantry and its upcoming charity event.

Plans are also in motion for next christmas, with Wendy finding a charity that welcomes crocheted hats. once they have been displayed in the shape of a festive christmas tree, the hats are donated to the homeless to keep them warm through winter.

The Crochet Club continues to be a shining example of staff creativity, teamwork and community spirit at Coventry College, proving that with dedication, and plenty of yarn, even the biggest ideas can come to life.
