The trip provided students with an unparalleled opportunity to explore the realities of armed response work, closely aligning with the career ambitions of many in the cohort.

Over the course of the visit, students were visited each day by members of the West Midlands Armed Response team. These sessions included comprehensive demonstrations and informative discussions about the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges faced by armed response officers. The interactions were designed to give students a detailed understanding of the critical skills and quick decision-making needed in the field.

To complement the educational aspect of the trip, Coventry College lecturers organised a series of engaging and challenging activities. These exercises were made to simulate the physical and mental demands of a career in armed response. Among the activities were drills that tested students’ tactical skills, an exercise where participants directed a blindfolded partner through obstacles to improve communication and teamwork, and a camouflage detection task aimed at honing observational skills.

The practical exercises were particularly well-received, with students expressing that they offered a realistic glimpse into the complexities of armed response work. “Participating in these drills and challenges gave us a clear idea of what to expect if we decide to pursue a career in the forces,” said one student. “It was fun but also educational, and it has made me realise this is definitely the career I want to go in to.”

The trip also allowed students to interact directly with seasoned professionals, gaining insights from their personal experiences and learning about the demanding nature of the job. The officers’ willingness to share their expertise provided a deeper understanding of the commitment and resilience needed in the field.

Coventry College’s Uniformed Public Services programme is dedicated to preparing students for careers in public service through both academic instruction and practical experience.
