Students from Coventry College’s Sports and Uniformed Public Services programmes recently embarked on enriching trips to Coventry University, gaining valuable insights and practical skills in their respective fields.

Over three consecutive Fridays, first-year students from the Level 3 Diploma in Sport & Physical Activity (Sports Coaching) programme attended sessions at the Coventry University Sports Coaching campus in Canley. The initiative aimed to enhance the learners’ understanding of planning and delivering effective sports coaching sessions.

University staff provided guidance as students collaborated with Coventry University undergraduates to develop micro-coaching sessions. The university students modelled essential coaching behaviours during practical activities, enabling college learners to build a robust portfolio of skills to support their qualifications

The programme culminated in a practical assessment where college learners delivered their own coaching sessions, while university students observed and provided constructive feedback, all under the supervision of university faculty. Rhys Morris, course coordinator for the BSc Sports Coaching degree, praised the college learners for their significant development throughout the sessions, expressing confidence in their potential for future careers in coaching or teaching.

On October 9, students from the Level 3 Extended Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services program engaged in a Professional Policing experience day at Coventry University. The event began with presentations outlining the various programmes available, entry requirements, and facilities at the university.

Students received detailed information on joining the police force, including the necessary skills and knowledge. Presentations also explored various career paths within the police, highlighting the advantages of obtaining a degree prior to entering the profession.

The day included an immersive crime scene role-play scenario conducted in a specially designed room. Here, learners were tasked with analysing and addressing a simulated situation, providing them with a practical understanding of police work.

Both experiences underscored Coventry College’s commitment to preparing students for successful careers by fostering connections with higher education institutions and providing real-world learning opportunities. As the students reflect on their experiences, they are equipped with newfound skills and insights that will undoubtedly aid them in their future pursuits in sports coaching and uniformed services.
