Coventry College Students Explore Radiotherapy Careers at University Hospital Open Day

Applied Science students from Coventry College were recently given a unique opportunity to explore the world of cancer treatment during a Radiotherapy Open Day at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW).
Hosted at the cutting-edge Arden Cancer Research Centre, the event aimed to provide students with valuable insights into the role of radiotherapy in cancer care, while showcasing the latest technologies and techniques used in the field.
The open day, which was attended by small groups of around ten students each, offered an in-depth look at the hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities. After a guided tour, students participated in a taster session where they could learn first-hand about the work of radiotherapists and oncologists. The session included demonstrations of the latest treatment equipment, as well as discussions on the essential role radiotherapy plays in managing and treating cancer.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for students to engage directly with the professionals in the field. Students were encouraged to ask questions, seeking advice and guidance from oncologists and radiotherapy experts about their careers, daily responsibilities, and the challenges they face in the treatment of cancer patients.
Blossom Svinurayi, an Applied Science student at Coventry College, reflected positively on the experience, saying, “I enjoyed the open day as it met my expectations more than I imagined. The team willingly shared their contacts for future help and advice, as well as addressing concerns I had about the career.”
The event not only provided valuable educational insights but also helped to foster connections between the students and professionals in the healthcare industry. Three of the students who attended the open day have already been offered work experience placements with the UHCW’s radiotherapy department as a direct result of the connections they made during the event.
Staff member Narinder, who attended the open day as part of her own professional development, also praised the initiative, expressing her satisfaction in seeing the students engage with such an important aspect of healthcare.
The Radiotherapy Open Day at UHCW represents a growing collaboration between Coventry College and the healthcare sector, aimed at preparing students for future careers in science and medicine. By providing students with hands-on experiences and direct access to professionals in the field, the event was a step toward bridging the gap between education and the workplace.
This experience underscores the importance of providing students with exposure to real-world applications of their studies and preparing them for the next stage in their careers, whether through further education or work placements.
