As Remembrance Day approaches, Coventry College is preparing to honour the fallen soldiers and animals who gave their lives during the world wars with a heartfelt and collaborative day of reflection.

On November 11th, the college will come together to mark the occasion with a series of events that highlight both the historical significance of Remembrance Day and the talents of its diverse student body.

This year, Coventry College has embraced a cross-curricular approach, bringing together students from various disciplines to contribute to the Remembrance Day activities. From parade rehearsals to artistic tributes, the college community has worked diligently to ensure that the day is one of respect, reflection, and remembrance.

Uniformed Public Services students have been at the forefront of the preparations, working tirelessly to perfect their parading skills in order to lead the Remembrance parade. Under the guidance of their lecturers, the students have been practicing marching, saluting, and other ceremonial duties, ensuring they are ready to represent the college with dignity and respect during the commemoration.

Meanwhile, students from the Performing Arts department have been rehearsing a special musical tribute. Their vocal talents will be showcased during the parade as they perform poignant songs to honour those who lost their lives during the wars.

In a creative tribute, Art Design and Fashion students have been busy creating  a powerful sculpture to help commemorate the fallen animals of the world wars. This sculpture, which depicts a horse—many of whom served in the war effort alongside soldiers—will be displayed in the reception of the college. The sculpture has been adorned with hand-crocheted poppies, symbolising remembrance and adding a personal, handcrafted touch to the tribute. The project has allowed students to blend their creative skills with historical reflection, paying homage to both human and animal sacrifices during the wars.

Health and Social Care students have also been heavily involved in the build-up to Remembrance Day. They have undertaken extensive research into the history of the world wars, focusing on the soldiers and animals who were lost. Their findings have been compiled into a presentation that will be displayed on large screens throughout the college, providing students and staff with a deeper understanding of the human cost of war. This research project has given the students an opportunity to connect with history on a personal level, while also developing valuable skills in presentation and communication.

In addition to the student-led initiatives, the college will be holding a Remembrance Day Parade on November 11th, where all students and staff will have the chance to come together in silence for the two-minute silence at 11:00 am. This moment of reflection will be accompanied by the students’ musical tribute and will provide everyone in attendance the opportunity to pause, reflect, and pay their respects.

Overall, the college community is coming together in a powerful way to mark Remembrance Day, and the college is excited to share this day of reflection and respect with its students, staff, and visitors. Coventry College’s cross-curricular collaboration is a shining example of how education can be a force for unity and remembrance, honouring those who came before while fostering a sense of pride and community among current students.

As November 11th approaches, the college is ready to ensure that Remembrance Day 2024 is a memorable and respectful occasion for all involved, providing students with an important opportunity to reflect on the past and contribute to a tradition of remembrance that continues to shape our future.
