Coventry College Learners Experience Military Activity Day at Army Reserves

For the fourth consecutive year, Coventry College’s Level 1 and Level 2 Uniformed Services learners participated in a “Military Activity Day” (MAD) event at the Army Reserves, 159 Regiment RLC, in Canley, Coventry, on Thursday, 5th December.
Organised by Sgt Reed, the event provided students with a unique, hands-on experience of the skills and challenges associated with a career in the Armed Forces. It also gave learners valuable insight into the entry requirements, application processes, and potential career opportunities available through the Army Reserves.
Throughout the day, students took part in various physical and mental challenges, including command tasks such as bridge-building, Batak drills, first aid lessons, and kit preparation. Additionally, they were involved in planning exercises, weapon stripping, and rescue missions, all designed to develop key skills like teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and leadership.
One of the most notable activities was the vision disorientation exercise, where learners were tasked with completing a challenge while experiencing simulated visual impairments. This particularly tested their ability to rely on other senses and work collaboratively under pressure. Other tasks such as relay races and planning exercises also emphasised the importance of determination, patience, and trust—traits essential for success in both the Army and other uniformed public services roles.

The MAD event highlighted the personal and professional attributes required for a career in the public services sector. Sgt Reed expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiasm shown by students, noting that many had shown genuine interest in applying for roles in the Army Reserves, a career path known for its rewarding nature and opportunities for personal development.
The event was a valuable opportunity for the learners to step out of their comfort zones, face new challenges, and build a greater understanding of the demanding yet fulfilling work involved in serving their country.
Photos from the event showcase the students engaged in the various tasks and activities, demonstrating their dedication and teamwork. The experience is just one of many initiatives that Coventry College is offering to prepare students for successful careers in the uniformed services.
