Coventry College Inspires Future Builders Through CTEC Construction Taster Event

Coventry College welcomed local school pupils for an engaging construction taster day as part of a wider initiative led by Construction Technical Excellence Colleges (CTEC).
The week-long programme, funded by CTEC, saw colleges across the South West Midlands, host practical activities designed to introduce young learners to careers in construction.
Coventry College hosted its event on Wednesday, welcoming Year 8 and Year 9 students from Nicholas Chamberlaine School and President Kennedy School.
During the visit, students took part in a range of interactive taster sessions within the college’s construction facilities. Activities included practical tiling sessions, where learners gained experience working on wall surfaces, as well as the opportunity to explore immersive virtual environments using the college’s VR headsets.

The virtual reality experience allowed students to “walk through” a simulated building site and housing estate, helping them understand the real environment of the construction industry. This innovative teaching method is already used by Coventry College to give learners insight into site conditions, expected behaviours, and industry practices in a safe and engaging way.
“I was delighted to see school aged learners having a go at construction tasters in our dedicated retrofit academy today. It was refreshing to see how engaged and enthusiastic these learners were with some even utilising virtual reality headsets to enter a real world construction environment. Connecting young people with in-demand technical skills is essential to supporting the country’s plans for prosperity. Today we were wowed by the comments from learners who are now considering careers in the industry. Thanks to the Construction Technical Excellence College for funding and supporting this activity.”

Sessions were led by the college’s experienced lecturers, who guided students through each activity while highlighting the importance of skilled trades and the wide range of career opportunities available within the sector.
Students ended the day on a high, receiving goodie bags filled with construction-themed items, including miniature spirit levels and hard hat stress balls, souvenirs to remember their introduction to the industry.
The CTEC initiative aims to inspire young people to consider careers in construction from an early age, addressing skills gaps and showcasing the diverse and rewarding opportunities the sector can offer.
Coventry College was proud to play its part in the programme, helping to spark interest, build confidence, and encourage the next generation of construction professionals.
