Coventry College marked Remembrance Day with a powerful and emotional ceremony to honour the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives protecting the country.

Staff and learners gathered outside the college for a poignant service, which was led by Principal Carol Thomas and featured a range of performances and tributes from students.

The ceremony began with a heartfelt speech by Principal Carol Thomas, who welcomed the gathered students, staff, and visitors to the college. In her speech, Thomas reminded everyone why November 11th holds such significance, paying tribute to the courage and dedication of the men and women who served in the armed forces.

The emotional tone of the ceremony was set by a beautiful performance from Coventry College’s Performing Arts students. After weeks of rehearsals, the students delivered a stunning rendition of Imagine by John Lennon, a fitting and thought-provoking song that echoed the themes of peace and unity. Their heartfelt performance moved many in the crowd, showcasing the talent and dedication of the college’s young artists.

Next, students from the Uniformed Public Services course demonstrated their training and discipline by conducting a ceremonial parade. This portion of the service was made even more special by the presence of several visitors to the college, who were former members of the armed forces, one of whom is now a staff member at the college. The visitors, along with the Public Services students, marched proudly as part of the ceremony, bringing an added layer of personal connection to the event.

A highlight of the parade was the laying of a poppy wreath, symbolising the college’s remembrance and respect for those who lost their lives in service to their country. Following the wreath-laying, the entire college observed a solemn two-minute silence at 11am. The silence was deeply moving, with students and staff alike standing in quiet reflection, creating an atmosphere of respect and reverence across the campus.

Many of the people present had their own personal connections to Remembrance Day, making the ceremony all the more significant. Some staff members and students have family members who served in the armed forces, while others have personal memories of loved ones lost in conflict. The event served as a reminder of the shared sacrifices that many people have made, both historically and in the present day.

The college expressed immense pride in the students and staff who worked so hard to organise the event. From the thoughtful speech by the Principal to the moving performances and the well-executed parade, the ceremony was a fitting tribute to all who have served and sacrificed. The strong sense of community and respect was felt by everyone involved.

For many at Coventry College, this Remembrance Day ceremony will remain a powerful and lasting memory—one that underscored the importance of remembering the past while honouring those who gave everything for the future.
