Coventry College’s Games students recently took part in an exciting Games Jam, hosted by SAE Institute as part of their work experience.

The event provided students with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills, creativity, and teamwork in a fast-paced, time-limited challenge. Crucial steps towards building a career in the competitive games industry.

A Games Jam is a unique event where participants are tasked with creating a game from scratch within a set timeframe. This immersive, high-pressure experience is designed to replicate the fast-paced environment of the gaming industry, where deadlines are tight, and creativity is key. For the Coventry College students, the challenge was set: develop either a 3D or 2D game using Unreal Engine 5 within five days. The theme for the jam was “Replicated”, sparking a wide range of innovative ideas and game concepts from the student teams.

Working in groups of no more than four, students had to collaborate, problem-solve, and innovate to create a playable game by the Friday 4:30pm deadline. The event not only gave them a chance to showcase their technical abilities but also fostered valuable teamwork and project management skills, both of which are essential in the games industry.

The competition was judged by two former Coventry College lecturers: Nathan Flannery, who now works for SAE Institute, and Joe Casey, who has since moved on to a position at University of Northampton. Their expert guidance and feedback provided students with a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed in the industry.

For the students, the Games Jam was an invaluable learning experience. Not only did they get the chance to improve their skills in game development, but they also were able to build connections with reputable industry professionals and universities, opening doors for future opportunities and career growth after college.

Coventry College is a firm believer in the power of work experience to prepare students for life after college. When engaging in a work experience placement students develop new skills to prepare them to be work place ready. Furthermore, participating in events like the Games Jam is essential in giving students the chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world challenges.

As the Games Jam came to a close, the students were proud of their hard work and the games they had created. While only one team could win, the event was a resounding success for everyone involved, showcasing the talent and dedication of Coventry College’s games students.

Congratulations to all the participants! The Games Jam has not only helped students improve their skills but also brought them one step closer to achieving their dream careers in the gaming industry.
