Coventry College’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students recently took part in a unique and educational experience sponsored by Virgin Money.

The initiative aimed to teach students valuable lessons in budgeting, money management, and investment.

The event began with a presentation from Virgin Money, where students were each lent £5. The challenge? To come up with creative and entrepreneurial ways to turn that small amount of money into a profit. This real-world lesson helped the students develop important skills in finance while encouraging teamwork and innovative thinking.

Following the presentation, the students got to work, brainstorming ideas and planning their strategies. With a one-week deadline, the pressure was on, as the students were preparing for ESOL’s highly anticipated winter fair. This event gave them the opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial spirit by setting up stalls where they could sell their creations and products.

From handcrafted Christmas decorations to henna temporary tattoos, and even fun games, the students went all out with their ideas. Each group brought something unique to the table, showcasing their creativity. The atmosphere at the winter fair was electric, with festive singing, dancing, and, most importantly, entrepreneurship in full swing.

The event proved to be a massive success, not only in terms of sales but also in terms of the invaluable lessons learned. The ESOL students collectively raised just under £350, marking a significant achievement for each participant.

The winter fair not only showcased the students’ entrepreneurial efforts but also highlighted their determination, creativity, and ability to work together as a team. The event has left everyone involved with new skills, a sense of accomplishment, and a greater understanding of business and finance.

Coventry College continues to provide unique opportunities for students to grow both academically and personally, and this Virgin Money initiative was just one of many that will help prepare them for success in the future.
