Coventry College’s Rugby Programme Boosts Rugby Union in Ghana with Kit Donations

In a heartwarming demonstration of international sportsmanship and solidarity, Coventry College has been donating old playing kits to Ghana for the past five years.
This initiative is aimed at promoting rugby union in Ghana and providing players with suitable training and playing kits to support the sport’s growth. The latest shipment of kits has been delivered to the Greater Accra Rugby Association, specifically benefiting the newly formed Thunder RFC.
The relationship between Coventry College and Ghana RFU began with a personal connection. Pete Glackin, Head of Rugby at Coventry College, coached Diaba, during his stay in the UK. Diaba’s passion for developing rugby union in his home country struck a chord with Glackin, sparking a partnership that has flourished over the years.
Glackin expressed his pleasure in supporting Ghana’s rugby community, stating,
“It’s a pleasure to donate the rugby kits over the past five years to the Ghana RFU community. I previously coached Diaba during his stay in the UK, and he showcased a real appetite towards developing rugby union back in his home country. We are more than happy to support their quest and see the rugby kit going to fantastic use within their rugby community.”
The kits, which include jerseys, shorts, and other essential rugby gear, have made a significant impact in Ghana. Diaba, now a key figure in Ghana Rugby, highlighted the importance of these donations.
“The playing kit donated from Coventry College has been amazing. We have many talented players who want to develop their game within rugby union and take it to a higher level. The playing kit has helped towards running tournaments and training sessions for the players within the communities in Ghana. Pete has kept in touch with me over the years and been a fantastic support, which we are very grateful for,”
The latest donation was received by Abdul Aziz Issah, President of the Greater Accra Rugby Association in Ghana. The kits are expected to provide a substantial boost to Thunder RFC, a new club in Accra that is rapidly gaining popularity. This support is crucial as it provides young players with the necessary equipment to train effectively and compete at higher levels.
Ghana’s rugby union has been growing steadily, with increasing participation at the grassroots level. The support from Coventry College has not only provided physical resources but has also strengthened the ties between the UK and Ghana rugby communities.
The impact of these donations extends beyond the rugby field. They inspire young athletes, instil a sense of pride, and promote healthy, active lifestyles. The kits also symbolise the possibility of achieving international cooperation and support, which is vital for the development of sports worldwide. As rugby union continues to grow in Ghana, the contributions from Coventry College will be remembered as a cornerstone in this journey.
For Coventry College and the Ghana RFU, this partnership is a testament to the positive outcomes that can arise from a shared love of the game. The donations not only equip players with the necessary gear but also foster a spirit of global camaraderie, encouraging young athletes to pursue their dreams and elevate the sport to new heights.
