Overview

Welders work in a range of industries, such as aerospace, construction, defence, mining, marine and structural engineering and settings including fabrication shops, assembly yards, construction and building sites, factories and operational facilities requiring maintenance and upgrade.

During this Apprenticeship you’ll learn the production of welds using manual and mechanised arc welding processes to sector standards. You’ll develop skills in a minimum of two weld process and material combinations, with at least one process being manual welding such as tungsten inert gas (TIG) or metal inert or metal active gas (MIG or MAG) techniques. Each welding process requires different welding equipment, assemblies, controls, skills and techniques, and represents a separate production process.

You’ll learn how to work with people from other teams and functions, such as plate fabricators, steel erectors, steel workers, riggers, stores operatives, supervisors, inspectors, testing and quality control technicians.

As part of the Apprenticeship you’ll also learn production quality standards, health and safety regulations and procedures, including wearing personal protection equipment. You’ll also be required to meet environmental and sustainability regulations and procedures – reducing waste and recycling materials.

Duration of study

18 months.

How you’ll be assessed

One of our Assessors will visit you in the workplace to observe the development of your skills and behaviours. You may also be assessed via:

  • An end-point assessment
  • Multiple-choice test
  • Practical observation and assessment
  • Question and answer sessions
  • Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Career and progression possibilities

On completion of this Apprenticeship, you can progress onto a Level 3 course, or you’ll be qualified to apply for various welding roles.
