This qualification is an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. It can apply to the many varied roles that full and part-time support staff may fulfil including: administrative roles, site support roles, technical roles and volunteers, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment.
The course is 4 weeks in length and consists of face to face delivery in College alongside your work placement.
Who is it suitable for?
The qualification is aimed at a range of Adult learners, who are already working in a school or college setting.
How is this qualification structured?
To achieve the Award the learner must complete 6 mandatory units:
- Understand Schools and Colleges as Organisations
- Understand Children and Young People’s Development
- Understand Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults
- Understand Children and Young People’s Health and Safety
- Safeguarding Children and Young People
- Understand Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People
Learners must be aged 19+ and will be required to undertake Initial Assessments in Maths & English
This course is fully funded for those on a low wage.

Fees and funding
If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
