Course Overview

This bespoke educational programme provides you with a platform to prepare for a professional rugby career through the guidance of Coventry College an RFU Accredited College and Wasps Academy.

This qualification intended for post-16 learners who want to progress directly to employment as a sports performer or to work in a sports performance organisation. Additionally, the breadth of the optional content in the qualification allows learners to widen their progression opportunities.
Learners may progress to a number of different higher-education courses.

Mandatory units of study include:

  • Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry
  • Health, Wellbeing and Sport
  • Professional Sports Performer
  • Applied Anatomy and Physiology for Professional Performance
  • Nutrition for Physical Performance
  • Psychology for Professional Sports Performance

Additional qualifications may include:

  • IRB Rugby Ready and Scrum Factory Qualification.

The study programme incorporates weekly training sessions which include strength and conditioning training, game analysis, fitness testing and weekly fixtures in the AoC Sports Premier League, including cup competitions.

As part of your study programme you will get the opportunity to develop your work experience and employability skills.

This course provides an educational and player pathway for talented rugby players to progress to Wasps Academy and potentially the Wasps first team. You can also progress to Higher Education study programmes.


At least 4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and/or maths
Level 2 qualification at Merit or above plus English/maths at Grade 4 or equivalent

Learners with lower grades or relevant experience will be considered subject to additional advice and guidance from a member of the curriculum team.

If you are between 19 and 23 years of age when you start this course you may need to pay course fees. However, we can help you with our flexible payment plans.

Making your application

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
