This course is designed as a dedicated pathway into the video game industry; where you will explore the subject in a practical environment and learn the principles behind a career in games.

The course is designed for students to decide and focus on their strongest areas and would also allow you to choose a career in other related fields, such as digital graphics and marketing.

Studying at Coventry College will give you the necessary skills to write for games production, design professional graphics, as well as managing your own independent company. You will learn how to use industry standard 3D modelling software and how to create your own world-space based around an original video game concept. You will develop your artistic techniques by creating concept artwork for your original game idea, and learn professional and transferrable skills in marketing, management and teamwork.

In discussion-driven lessons and seminars, you will challenge yourself to demonstrate contemporary issues within and surrounding the industry, as well as using workshops to explore your creative qualities. There will be plenty of independent and group study time factored into the course, where you can prepare yourself for what the games industry will expect from you.

* If you have not already achieved a GCSE pass at grade C or above in English and Maths you will study Maths and/ or English as an integral part of your college programme.

Four GCSEs at Grade 4 (C in the old grading structure) or above, including Art and one in English or Maths; with some preference given to related subjects such as ICT, Computing, Graphics, and/or other Art courses. Or, a related Level 2 Qualification (Game Design & Digital Media), preferably completed at a ‘Distinction’ grade with GCSE/Level 2 in English & Maths.

In addition, you must produce a portfolio of artwork for an interview.

This course is free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 2 qualification.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
