Course Overview
Core Maths is a great choice if you are interested in a career that involves applying maths to real-world problems, data analysis, and statistics, and is particularly useful if you are hoping to study, or have a career in, social sciences, business, economics, chemistry, biology, information technology and computing, psychology or health sciences.
Core Maths emphasises practical problem-solving skills and critical thinking, preparing you for the challenges of further education and the demands of the modern workplace. In Core Maths, you will engage with practical mathematical concepts which can be applied to real-world scenarios.
These include:
- Data analysis: Gathering and interpreting data. Representing the data numerically, using different averages and measures such as standard deviation, and diagrammatically.
- Financial Maths: Understanding concepts like interest, mortgages, budgeting, taxes, and making financial decisions.
- Proportional Reasoning: Handling ratios, percentages, scales, and rates.
- Estimation and Approximation: Developing skills in estimating values and making approximate calculations.
- Critical Thinking and Analysis: Developing skills to evaluate information, make informed decisions, and solve real-world problems.
- Normal Distribution: Finding probabilities using the Normal Distribution, and calculating and interpreting confidence intervals.
- Correlation and Regression: Calculating the strength of the relationship between two variables, finding an equation for the relationship and using this to make predictions.
The Core Maths qualification is graded A-E and has the same number of UCAS tariff points as an AS level qualification.
The qualification is assessed by two 90-minute exams in May/June.
