Level 3 Access to Higher Education – Core Science

This course is for learners who are 19 and over.

The Access to Higher Education course prepares you to study at university and is also widely recognised by employers. It is designed for those who have left school without the usual qualifications such as A Levels.

Course structure

The hours of study consist of 10 mandatory class contact hours per week. You will also need to commit to self-study outside of class times.

Within the course we offer 3 subjects which have been specially selected to fulfil university entry requirements:

  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry

You will study a range of modules that will make up 45 credits:

  • Cell Biology
  • Reproduction and Growth
  • Practical Physics
  • Biochemistry
  • Practical Inorganic Chemistry
  • Electricity

In addition to the 45 credits, a further 15 credits will be ungraded, 6 credits will be from study skills and the further 9 credits will be from core modules.

You will be assessed via a range of methods including essays, reports, presentations, projects and examinations.

You will need to show they have sufficient skills in English and maths, which means satisfying one of the following requirements: English GCSE grade 4 (C) or above, Level 2 or equivalent, maths GCSE grade 3 (D) or above, Level 1 or equivalent.

If the above criteria cannot be met you will be asked to complete a screening test at interview to determine the appropriate level.

This course only attracts government funding for those aged 18 or over on the 31st August in the academic year in which they enrol.

Students aged 24+ can apply for a 24+ loan to cover the cost of the course (and are advised to apply as soon as they are accepted on the course).

Making your application

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
