If you need to retake GCSE English Language to obtain at least grade 4 (C), this part-time daytime or evening course will help you to do this. It is also suitable for mature students who need GCSE English Language for career purposes or for higher education.

The course is provisionally available on the following days & times:

Daytime

  • 3 hours per week
  • Monday 1:15-4:30pm, or
  • Wednesday 9:00-12:15pm, or
  • Friday 9:00-12:15pm

Evening

  • 3 hours per week
  • Tuesday 5.30:-8:30pm, or
  • Thursday 5.30-8:30pm

Course content:

This is an intensive course requiring full commitment and attendance. The focus is on developing written skills and improving the quality of the English you use. You will also develop your ability to analyse the effect of language in different texts.

The course runs from September to June (1 year), daytime or evening (dates and times will be available after enrolment finishes in August). During the year, you will be assessed via two final exams and an in year speaking and listening assessment.

Two final examinations are in June:

Paper One:  Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing (50% of GCSE)

  • Section A: Reading (25%) – one literature fiction text
  • Section B: Writing (25%) – descriptive or narrative writing

Paper Two:  Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing (50% of GCSE)

  • Section A: Reading (25%) – one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text
  • Section B: Writing (25%) – writing to present a viewpoint

There are two ways of studying this course, you can either study this course on day release or you can study this course in the evening.

 

If you are 19+, the course is free if you have not yet already achieved A* to C or 9 to 4 with the new grading scale.

It is free for 16-18 year olds on study programmes.

You need to provide evidence that you are capable of succeeding at GCSE level. This could be one of the following:

– GCSE Grade D in English Language or NEW Grade 3 at GCSE Level
– At least a Level 2 in Functional Skills English
– Suitable IELTS score (if your first language is not English)
– Or an acceptable alternative.

A place on the course is subject to a successful interview with the course tutor.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
