Level 2 Diploma in Public Services

If you are interested in taking a preparatory programme in order to gain entry into one of the uniformed services such as the Army, Navy, RAF, Police, Fire Service or Ambulance Service, then this is the course for you. The course emphasises physical fitness and practical activities in order to raise fitness levels to the standard required for entry into the uniformed services.

Course structure

You will be studying key areas, including:

  • Public service skills
  • Employment in the uniformed services
  • Career planning
  • Improving health and fitness for entry to the public services
  • Adventurous activities and teamwork
  • Land navigation and map reading
  • Law
  • Plus nationally recognised Functional Skills qualifications.

While on this course you will have the opportunity to undertake some work experience with either uniformed public services or uniformed and non uniformed public services and also enjoy a range of outdoor activities such as abseiling, canoeing and rock climbing during a 5 day residential at an outdoor pursuit centre.

With the appropriate grades, you can progress to a Level 3 Extended Diploma or apply for a post in the uniformed/public services such as the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force. Opportunities also exist in the civilian service including the Police, Fire Service and Ambulance Service.


4 GCSEs at Grade 3 (D in the old grading structure) or above including one in English or maths

Relevant Level 1 qualification with GCSE/Level 1 in English & maths.

Course may be free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 2 qualification.

For all other students fees apply:
1st year course fee £1287; Exam Fee £85.

Making your application

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
