Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing (VRQ)
This qualification is a national requirement to become a registered hairdresser. You will study the theory of hairdressing in ’Headstart’, our fully equipped commercial salon. You will also be working with members of the public to put your skills into practice.
You will be studying key areas, including:
- Colouring techniques
- Style and finish Setting and dressing
- Health and safety
- Reception skills
- Client consultation
- Plaiting and twisting
- Promoting products and services to clients
- Display and stacking products to promote sales
This course will provide you with the skills needed to perform confidently, effectively and independently in learning, life and work. You will enjoy visits to hair and beauty exhibitions including Beauty UK.
Assignments, online examinations and practical assessments. You will be assessed on an ongoing basis by practical observation in a simulated working environment.
Successful students can seek employment in hair salons, leisure centres, health farms, hotels and cruise liners. Alternatively, you may progress to Level 2 in Barbering or Level 3 in Hairdressing or an apprenticeship.
Course may be free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 2 qualification.

Either completion of a full level 1 in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy or a grade 9-4 (A-C) in maths or English and a positive school report. Mature learners need to have good personal presentation and communication skills.
Making your application
We will check your application to see if you meet the standard entry requirements for the course. If you do, you’ll receive an invitation via email to attend an interview with a Curriculum Tutor.
Fees and funding
If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
From entry-level qualifications, through to degree-level and specialist professional courses there’s something here for students with little or no formal education right up to career high-flyers. Expect a vibrant environment where you can meet people from different backgrounds and cultures.
