This qualification is ideal if you are considering a career in caring for children and have a basic understanding of childcare, either through previous completion of a qualification in Caring for Children or through workplace experience. It could also support you with re-engaging with learning or progressing to learning at the next level, and break down barriers to you entering the childcare workforce.

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification provides you with an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to care for young children. The qualification is formed of a variety of optional units that cover children’s growth, learning and development. There are also units to help with self-development. This enables you to tailor the qualification to your interests. The subject areas include (but are not limited to):

  • safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • science, technology, craft and musical activities for young children
  • practical health and safety when with young children
  • finding out about forest schools
  • supporting babies to play, understanding play for early learning and children’s play and leisure activities in the community
  • sharing learning experiences with children
  • human growth and development
  • respecting and valuing children
  • investigating a vocational area
  • self-development
  • preparing for your next steps.

Completion of this qualification is achieved through classroom-based learning.

What knowledge and skills will this qualification give you?

Completion of this qualification will give you a basic understanding of the knowledge and the skills needed to care for young children, for example:

  • knowing the support, a young child needs to gain confidence through play
  • understanding activities that will develop a child’s talking and listening skills
  • understanding the role of a routine in the care of a young child
  • knowing about the need for a healthy diet for the young child
  • knowing about combining food to make up a balanced diet
  • knowing how to respect and value children as individuals
  • knowing the role of adults in supporting play and leisure activities in the community.

What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification will not lead directly to employment. However, it does provide you with the knowledge to make an informed choice as to whether a career in caring for children, or learning at a higher level in a related field, is right for you.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
