Our Carpentry and Joinery course is specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification. This course is suitable for any learners looking to develop their basic skills with the use of carpentry tools, or any learners who has expressed an interest in a career within the carpentry industry. If you are a practical person and would like to take an introductory qualification in Carpentry and Joinery, the Level 1 Diploma could be for you. It will provide you with a range of practical skills and knowledge which will give you a sound basis for a future career within the construction industry.

  • Producing Basic Woodworking Joints
  • Maintaining and Using Carpentry and Joinery Hand Tools
  • Preparing and Using Carpentry and Joinery Portable Power Tools

The course is assessed through a combination of practical and written assignments. You will have to complete a practical phase test, a theory test paper for each unit and an external on-line exam. If you successfully complete the course, you will be awarded a  City Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery. This is a nationally recognised qualification. This course is a Study Programme which consists of:

  • Work Experience
  • Tutorial
  • Maths*
  • English*

* If you have not already achieved a GCSE pass at grade C or above in English and Maths you will study Maths and/ or English as an integral part of your college programme. You will require PPE (personal protective equipment) in order to start your course. You’ll need steel toe cap boots and a hi vis top.

GCSE Grade 3 (or equivalent) in English and maths

This course is free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 1 qualification.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
