Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children
This qualification enables you to develop the skills and knowledge needed to care for young children. This course is the first step towards a career in childcare and early years.
You will be studying key areas, including:
- Growth and development of young children
- Supporting babies to play
- Practical health and safety
You will also cover units related to personal development and Functional Skills in maths and English. If you demonstrate good progress and excellent attendance you will have the opportunity to undertake a placement in a childcare setting.
Assessment will take place through written unit assignments and tutor reports.
You can progress to the Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to Early Years Education and Care if you meet the entry requirements of a pass grade, a satisfactory reference and 80% attendance on the study programme.
You will need a clear DBS enhanced disclosure in order to progress to Level 2.
One GCSE at grade 3 (D), a satisfactory reference and a successful interview with a member of the Childcare and Education team.
Course may be free for 16-18yrs; for 19-23yrs, course is free if you have not achieved a full Level 2 qualification.

1st year course fee is £1113; exam fee is £96.
Making your application
We will check your application to see if you meet the standard entry requirements for the course. If you do, you’ll receive an invitation via email to attend an interview with a Curriculum Tutor.
Fees and funding
If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
From entry-level qualifications, through to degree-level and specialist professional courses there’s something here for students with little or no formal education right up to career high-flyers. Expect a vibrant environment where you can meet people from different backgrounds and cultures.
