Course Overview

This engaging and vibrant one-year full-time program places a strong focus on acquiring and honing skills relevant to the ever-evolving creative and visual arts field, all geared towards enhancing your job prospects and career advancement opportunities. The curriculum centres on fine art and accommodates students transitioning from a Foundation diploma, a BTEC Extended Diploma or A-levels, as well as mature learners seeking to retrain in the creative and visual arts domain. The Arts Practice course provides a platform for students from diverse backgrounds to explore and produce, utilising the skills and insights they gain to uncover and nurture their unique talents and strengths within a creative practice.

How Will I Be Assessed?

Students are assessed through a variety of methods designed to reflect the diverse nature of the creative and visual arts field. These include examinations, coursework, Project-Based Learning (PBL), presentations, exhibitions, practical tasks, role-playing, and case studies. Assessment is holistic and aligned with five key assessment criteria: 

  • Contextual Knowledge 
  • Ideas Generation and Development 
  • Technical Knowledge and Skill 
  • Professional Practice 
  • Communication 

Units and Learning Outcomes 

During your HNC year of study, you will complete two units, with each designed to assess your development across these objectives: 

A1: Concept & Development (340 GLH – 85 credits) 

Unit code: T/650/4768 

  • A1.1: Explore the history, theories, and developments relevant to your area of practice. 
  • A1.2: Develop ideas using an iterative approach to problem-solving in creative practice. 
  • A1.3: Build technical knowledge and skills to support your creative practice.
  • A1.4: Examine professional knowledge, behaviours, and practices within the creative sector. 
  • A1.5: Utilise various techniques, media, and formats to communicate ideas effectively to diverse audiences. 

A2: Creative Project (140 GLH – 35 credits) 

Unit code: Y/650/4769 

  • A2.1: Apply contextual knowledge to inform the development of a creative project. 
  • A2.2: Analyse a given brief and develop creative solutions through an iterative process. 
  • A2.3: Demonstrate technical knowledge and skill in producing a project outcome. 
  • A2.4: Exhibit professional knowledge, behaviours, and practices in responding to a given brief. 
  • A2.5: Present the development process and final outcomes of a creative project to a specified audience. 

Feedback and Learning Support 

Throughout the course, you will receive regular feedback in oral, written, and online formats. This feedback is designed to monitor your progress, refine your skills, and guide your creative development. 

The course employs Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodologies, offering practical, industry-relevant experiential learning opportunities. While there is a strong focus on hands-on practice, academic skills are equally essential for success. 

Progression and Next Steps 

Successful completion of the HNC Art and Design program provides a pathway to further study or employment. You may choose to advance to the Level 5 HND in Art and Design through an additional year of study. 

The program also supports professional development, offering opportunities to connect with the industry through masterclasses, practical workshops, and industry visits. Our teaching staff, all of whom are practicing professionals in the creative arts sector, will provide expert guidance as you explore career opportunities or prepare for further education.
