Course Overview
Alternative Academic Qualifications (AAQ) replace certain BTEC Level 3 qualifications. These exciting new training qualifications have been designed in partnership with universities and employers to create a more direct route into higher education and skilled employment.
You’ll combine knowledge with practical, career-focused training and get real-world experiences to develop the subject expertise and skills that employers and universities value.
AAQs are perfect if you want to progress to higher education while keeping your options open for a wide range of careers.
Sport, Health and Human Biology
The Sport element aims to provide you with the specialist knowledge, skills and understanding relating to the sport and physical activity sector, in areas such as exercise and testing, health and lifestyle, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and preparing for a career in sport.
For Health you’ll develop the knowledge, understanding and skills in areas such as; equality, diversity and rights, health and safety, anatomy and physiology, person-centred approaches, mental health, long-term physiological conditions and public health strategies.
In Human Biology you’ll develop applied knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to medical science such as genetics, nutrition, disease and drug development. You’ll put your learning into practice by performing biomedical techniques.
Duration of Study
2 years.
Career and Progression Possibilities
This AAQ pathway is equivalent to 3 A Levels, giving you the UCAS points to progress to University. Subjects and careers include; Sports Science, Sports Coaching and Instruction, Biological Sciences, Life Sciences, Human Biology, Occupational Health, Social Work, Public Health.
4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English or Maths.
Free for those aged 16-18.

Fees and funding
If you are aged 16-18 and applying for a full-time programme, then you will not have to pay for your course. If you are aged 19+ then there may be a fee for your course.
