Tuqa Kaabi
Studied: Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Interior and Architectural Design
Tuqa Kaabi reflects on her time at the college and how it has shaped her future in Architecture.

Background
Tuqa Kaabi began her Level 3 Architecture course at Coventry College in 2021. Originally from Iraq, Tuqa moved to the UK in 2019, where she taught herself to speak English while adapting to a new culture and education system. From an early age, Tuqa had a strong passion for art and design. Inspired by seeing her sister join Coventry College, she decided to pursue Architecture, recognising it as the ideal path to combine creativity with practical skills.
Experience at Coventry College
Tuqa describes her time at Coventry College as “life changing.” She credits the college with giving her both the freedom and opportunity to learn in well-equipped workshops that provided everything she needed to develop her skills. The hands-on learning environment allowed Tuqa to grow in confidence, experiment creatively, and gain practical experience with architectural tools and techniques.
A significant influence during her time at college was her lecturer, David. Tuqa recalls that David not only supported her but every student in the class. She explained:
“David not only supported me, but everyone in the class. He had a way of finding what you weren’t confident in and building you up until you succeeded.”
Although Tuqa consistently produced work of a high standard, she was initially quiet and reserved. David recognised this and encouraged her to develop her presentation and communication skills, explaining that confidence in speaking was essential to progress further in the field. This advice proved transformative. Tuqa took it with her throughout the rest of her education, and it continues to shape her professional development today.
Progression to University
After completing her course at Coventry College, Tuqa progressed to Coventry University to continue her studies in Architecture. She quickly noticed how well prepared she was compared to students who had not attended college. Her prior experience with machinery, workshop practices, and architectural software gave her a clear advantage and allowed her to excel from the outset.
This strong foundation led to outstanding academic success. Tuqa was awarded Best Performance of the Second Year, followed by achieving a First Class Grade in her final year. These achievements reflect both her talent and the confidence she developed during her college studies.
Career Outcomes
With one semester left at university, Tuqa has already been offered a role as a Design Assistant at Camlins Landscape Architects. This early job offer highlights her readiness for professional practice and the effectiveness of her educational journey from college to university and into employment.
Reflection and Advice
Looking back, Tuqa attributes much of her success to the encouragement, skills, and confidence she gained at Coventry College. The combination of practical learning, supportive teaching, and personal development played a crucial role in shaping her future.
Her advice to students considering joining the college is simple but powerful:
“Have a goal and keep fighting for it.”
Tuqa’s journey is a strong example of how determination, support, and the right educational environment can transform potential into achievement.
