Philip Roberts studied an Access to Computer Science programme at Coventry College. We spoke to him about how the programmes has prepared him for his dream job as a Security Operations Centre Analyst.

Why Coventry College?
Coventry College was a natural choice for me due to its convenient location close to my home. Its central location makes it easily accessible for students from all over the city. The college’s resources and facilities are also top-notch, providing a conducive environment for learning and personal growth.
Additionally, the College offered the specific Access to Computer Science course that aligned perfectly with my career aspirations.
My time at Coventry College was both challenging and rewarding. The Access course was intense, with a significant amount of work to be completed over the nine months. I spent my days immersed in learning from the tutors, conducting research, and writing assignments. The rigorous nature of the course was demanding but it thoroughly prepared me for the next step in my education.
The best part of the programme was undoubtedly the practical elements. We didn’t just learn about theoretical concepts like event-driven programming; we also had to apply our knowledge by building applications. This hands-on approach gave me a strong sense of achievement and practical skills that have been invaluable in my ongoing studies and work.
How did studying at Coventry College support your progression?
Studying at Coventry College equipped me with essential skills, particularly in academic writing. The ability to write clear, concise, and well-structured academic reports has been a lifesaver during my time at university. I often receive commendations for my academic writing, a skill I honed at Coventry College.
The staff at Coventry College were incredibly supportive and approachable. Kyle MacDougall, in particular, was always available to answer questions and provide constructive feedback. Their encouragement and guidance were essential in helping me navigate the challenges of the course and stay focused on my goals.
What did you progress onto?
After finishing the Access to Computer Science programme at Coventry College with a grade of AAA, I chose to study for a Cyber Security undergraduate degree at Edinburgh Napier University.
I am currently still studying at Edinburgh Napier University. However, I have taken an industry year to gain experience within IT Security. In this role, I manage identified vulnerabilities and oversee the company’s phishing campaigns. I’m living in Manchester and working in the industry to complement my academic studies.
My ultimate aim is to become a Security Operations Centre Analyst. To achieve this, I am currently studying for several Microsoft certifications. These certifications will enhance my knowledge and credentials, helping me to advance in my chosen field.
What would your advice be to anyone thinking about joining Coventry College?
My advice to anyone considering Coventry College is to take the plunge and see where it leads you. Academia might not be for everyone, but you won’t know unless you try. Coventry College offers a supportive and enriching environment that can help you achieve your educational and career goals.
