We spoke to adult learner Glenn Coleman-Pitt who returned to college to learn the fundamental skills he needed to pursue a career in the automotive industry.

Why did you choose Coventry College?
I chose Coventry College primarily because of its location. It was local to my home, making it convenient for me to attend classes. Additionally, the College offered the exact courses I wanted to take. I completed Level 1, 2, and 3 in Body Mechanics, which provided a comprehensive foundation for my career in auto repairs.
As a mature student in my 30s, my experience at Coventry College was unique. There were challenges, as most of my classmates were school leavers. However, this diversity also enriched my learning experience. The mix of perspectives and ages in the classroom created a dynamic environment. Despite the challenges, my time at Coventry College was incredibly rewarding and instrumental in shaping my career path.
The programme served as a stepping stone to the career I always wanted. It helped me gain a clear insight into the auto repair industry and allowed me to understand both what I wanted to do and what I didn’t. This clarity was invaluable as I moved forward in my career.
Where did the programme lead you to?
After completing my studies at Coventry College, I attended a number of intensive courses in PDR (Paintless Dent Repair), Smart Repair, and Windscreen Repairs. These courses provided me with the specialised skills I needed to advance in my career.
Currently, I am self-employed and run my own mobile body shop called C.A.R COSMETIC AUTO REPAIRS. I travel to my clients and provide a range of auto repair services, from minor dents to full cosmetic restorations. Being able to work independently and manage my own schedule is incredibly fulfilling. The positive feedback from my customers and their satisfaction with my work keep me motivated and grounded. I’m proud to have created a business that reflects my skills and dedication.
How did the College support you as an adult learner?
The staff at Coventry College were supportive and their dedication helped me stay focused and motivated.
Coventry College provides a great grounding for individuals to develop and build their skills in their chosen subjects. It offered a solid foundation that prepared me well for my future career.
Studying at Coventry College was pivotal in shaping my career choice. As a mature worker with experience in the automotive sector, mostly in factories, I knew I wanted more. The College allowed me to build on my previous experience and eventually set up my own business. The skills and knowledge I gained were directly applicable to my career goals.
What’s next for you?
In the future, I aim to continue building my business. Currently, I am a sole trader, but I hope to expand and have a small team working with me. Additionally, I want to do something special for my wife, who has been my biggest cheerleader in setting up and running the business.
What would your advice be to someone thinking about returning to education as an adult learner?
My advice to anyone considering Coventry College is to stay focused and not give up. Expanding your knowledge is powerful and can open many doors. The skills and experiences you gain at Coventry College can be the foundation for a successful and fulfilling career.
