Educational Journey

Connor’s early education at Coundon Court School was instrumental in shaping his initial interest in architecture. His decision to enrol in a Level 3 Architecture programme at Coventry College was influenced by the course’s reputation for being both diverse and local, making it a convenient and appealing choice. Connor appreciated the balance between creativity and dedication that the program offered, allowing him to explore various facets of design, especially the 3D aspects that he found particularly engaging.

“The course allowed me to have a creative flair, and I enjoyed the process of design, especially the 3D side. This is where I fell in love with architecture and then transitioned into Interior Architecture.”

The programme’s structure, which included regular feedback and assessments from tutors, was another highlight for Connor. These weekly check-ins helped him stay on track, continuously improving his work. The detailed feedback and the opportunity to develop a portfolio for university applications were crucial elements that prepared him for the next step in his educational journey.

Transition to University

Inspired by a talk from Heidi, a representative from Coventry University, Connor decided to apply for the university’s Interior Architecture and Design course. The guidance he received at Coventry College regarding the UCAS application process and portfolio development gave him a significant advantage, particularly in 3D modelling – a skill not widely mastered by his peers.

At Coventry University, Connor continued to thrive, achieving a 2:1, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The university experience further deepened his love for the creative side of architecture, balancing fun with the seriousness of obtaining a degree.

“The course was extremely fun and creative. It had a lot of different aspects, from research and sketching to 3D work – it was an enriching experience,” he says.

Internship at Amtico

During his time at Coventry University, Connor secured a six-month internship with Amtico, a renowned flooring specialist with operations in 36 countries. This internship was a pivotal moment in Connor’s career, providing him with practical industry experience and exposure to real-world applications of his academic studies.

The internship not only honed his skills in CAD design and 3D modelling but also broadened his understanding of the global design industry. This experience was instrumental in shaping his professional aspirations, as he now looks forward to a career in CAD design or 3D design, with the potential of starting his own business in the future.

Advice to Prospective Learners

“If you have a passion, just go for it. When you put your mind to it, time flies by because you’re ‘in the zone’.”

He also highlights the importance of embracing feedback as a tool for growth, advising others to “love feedback. Critical feedback allows you to progress further within yourself and within your work.”
